Professional football was firstly a regional sport in the early part of the 20th century, with most informal round centered around a single state or region with only limited play outside state lines. There were no national leagues or tournaments for the professional game, in spite of numerous attempts: an earlier NFL was unable to expand beyond Pennsylvania in 1902, the New York City-based World Series of Pro Football tournament disbanded after two seasons and lack of fan interest. and other attempts to either combine existing circuits or create new ones from scratch never materialized.
Although the league did not maintain official standings for their 1920 inaugural season and teams played schedules that included non-league opponents, the APFA awarded the Akron Pros the championship by virtue of their 8–0–3 (8 wins, 0 losses, and 3 ties) record.
The following season resulted in the Chicago Staleys controversially winning the title over the Buffalo All-Americans.
In 1922, the APFA changed its name to the National Football League
